Specially Designed Instruction: Increasing Your Instr. Toolkit - Redwood

Description

Presenter: Dr. Martina Wagner has served both mainstream and English language learners for over twenty years in grades Pre-K through adult education.  Her expertise includes best practice and programming for ELs, Sheltered Instruction, Co-teaching, Special Education Identification of ELs, WIDA, and English Language Learning assessments and data.

Description:  Students with disabilities and other struggling learners often experience intense anxiety and frustration when asked to perform new tasks or master new content.  Such frustration results from uncertainty about their learning process.  Students who don't have a systematic method for approaching learning tasks tend to struggle when required to acquire new knowledge or apply prior learning to new tasks. Educators who support students with disabilities and other struggling learners can break this unproductive cycle by providing explicit instruction in academic and self-regulation strategies.

Join this session to refresh your toolkit!  Participants will analyze and walk away with strategies in:  The importance of Academic Language in Direct Instruction; Developing and Activating Prior Knowledge and Building background; and Engaging students and increasing Interaction.
