Morning Session - Developing Local Literacy Plans to Meet Requirements of Reading Well by Third Grade - This session supports the 3rd Grade Reading component of World's Best Workforce and will provide participants with information and time to discuss and network with others. Topics to be addressed include:
- The purpose and critical components of Local Literacy Plans.
- Exploring local assessment options for identifying struggling readers, including students with characteristics consistent with dyslexia
- Guidance and features of the secure online Read Well Data and Plan Submission application and reports
- Systemic supports for effective instruction and intervention
- Understanding new district requirements from recent legislative sessions
- Accessing MDE resources to support district efforts for development of effective Local Literacy Plans and implementation of the 2010 MN ELA standards
- Opportunities for Q and A. and networking with others
Afternoon Session - Balanced Literacy - Balanced literacy is a framework for literacy instruction based largely on the work of Irene Fountas and Gay Pinnell. Routines and rituals, whole group and small group instruction and independent practice are key components of this framework. Balanced literacy can help to transform your classroom into a community of independent readers and writers.
Topics to be addressed may include:
- An introduction to a balanced literacy framework
- How to address the state standards within a balanced literacy framework
- Demonstrations of the components of balanced literacy
- Time to reflect upon how to integrate components of balanced literacy into the classroom
