Sex Education with Deaf, DeafBlind & Hard of Hearing Students

This workshop, which focuses on DDBHH students who communicate using Sign Language will offer participants the opportunity to learn specific signs related to sexual education curriculum and specific strategies for teaching sexual health to DDBHH and or Disabled youth. Additionally, participants will gain a better understanding of the importance of utilizing trauma informed approaches around this particular topic.

*This workshop focuses largely on populations of students who communicate using American Sign Language. However, many of the strategies we will discuss will also benefit students who do not sign.

Intended or Target Outcomes

  1. Learn between 20-30 different signs associated with Sexual Health Education.
  2. Identify and practice specific strategies for teaching material to students who may have language and learning challenges.
  3. Identify underlying dynamics related to sexuality and disability and suggest ways to work through possible barriers.
  4. Identify specific approaches that can be used with classroom interpreters with respect to sexual health education that centers DDBHH students’ comfort.
