MORNING SESSION - In this interactive workshop, we will review the research on effective literacy practices for young children, practice instructional strategies and activities that can be used with preschool and kindergarten age children, and collaboratively plan for the application of these practices to our work in daycares, preschools, and elementary settings.  Please bring some of your favorite picture books so that we can practice with materials that are meaningful to you and your children.
 
AFTERNOON SESSION - This interactive training day is designed to support preschool and Kindergarten teachers in expanding skills to facilitate learning through play.  We know that all learners (adults included!) learn best through participation and experience.  This training is designed with this in mind.  Come ready to learn - and play!
 
  • Increase awareness and scope of research supporting learning through play.
  • Identify critical preschool learning skills.
  • Increase collection of specific activities to support learning through play. 
  • Increase skills to continue expanding and growing array of creative learning opportunities

 ABOUT THE PRESENTERS:
 
Morning - Debra Stevens Peterson, PhD. works as a teacher educator and consultant for the Minnesota Center for Reading Research and the department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of MN.  She has collaborated with teachers and schools to improve reading instruction and implement school-wide reform for the past fifteen years.  Current publications include articles Reading Research Quarterly, Elementary School Journal, and The Reading Teacher.  Awards include the International Reading Association Albert J. Harris award for reading research.  She has also written multiple books chapters and is the co-author of No More Teaching to the Middle.
 
Afternoon - Donna Miller has been with the Centers of Excellence for Young Children with Disabilities since it's inception in 2010.  She has supported local preschool, ECFE and School Readiness teams with the implementation Pyramid Model, which focuses on the social emotional development of young children.  With a background in early childhood special education, Donna has taught inclusive preschool classrooms as well as supported children and families on the journey of autism and challenging behaviors.  She continues her work on supporting families through the Centers of Excellence Family-Guided Routines-Based intervention innovation.  In addition, Donna serves as an adjunct in higher education, supervising student teachers in preschool environments.  Donna holds licensure in PreK, ECSE, and special education administration, and a doctorate in educational leadership.
